July 17th, 2005

Dear Friends,

Well, friends, I have to say that it is with pleasure that I report that that this week we had some unbelievable, spectacular fish life and action on the La Paz side. During a five day live aboard that we organized with Kurt Bickel (www.breathhold.com) with a group of both East Coast and West Coast divers, we visited the legendary islands of Las Animas, Santa Cruz, San Dieguito, and although some good fish was shot, the larger pelagics that we were searching for were elusive. Sure, there were some 80lbs plus Amberjacks, a couple of Wahoos, and some great eating fish to keep our cooks happy, including some good sized Pargo, however the larger Yellowfin Tuna… well, no where to be seen… except for on the fish finders, lurking in deeper waters. So the group decided to go back to El Bajo for yet another try… and indeed it unveiled the magic that makes the Sea of Cortez the magical place that keeps leaving us speechless! The 80oF water was a beautiful blue, offering the divers over 80 feet of visibility, making the top of the mount easily visible, and the big shapes lurking below.

Our Hamptons Baja newcomer KJ quickly set the tone of the day and continue his great streak of the trip by securing a nice 50lb Wahoo in the ice chest, quickly followed by Kurt Bickel expertly stoning a 77lb Grouper, avoiding a unwanted struggle on the outskirts of the mount. For the rest of the day, several Wahoos were shot, as were several good size amberjacks, but schools of of up to 30 Wahoos were seen, and divers reported missing shot on Wahoos of over 100lbs as well as on estimated world record AJ's of over 120lbs! Several saw various Marlin and Sailfish, and in particular Paul Miller came eye to eye with what he estimated is an 500lbs+ Black Marlin, and the sight was beautiful that he was not able to make himself take advantage of the absolutely perfect shot the Marlin offered him, and I am sure that moment, that vision and that exchange with a beautiful, powerful fish, will be etched in his memory for ever, even more so that if he had the trophy to show for it. To add a special touch, and bid our friends farewell until their next visit, the Sea also threw in the opportunity to dive with a Whale Shark and a Manta, just as a closer.

The following day we had our friends Julie Riffe an Fiancée Will, as well as Cameron Kirkonnel and friends, who also had a spectacular day, and a spectacular catch, that was later spectacularly cooked up in many mouth watering ways in Tequilas Bar & Grill. The following day, Julie shot a 67lb Amberjack in Cerralvo whilst being videoed by Will, surely giving her yet another World record.

We at DESEA would like to thank our friends, both old and new, who have been visiting us for the opportunity to spend time with such legends, thank our crew who outshone themselves by their hard work and enthusiasm, but most of all, we would like to thank the biggest player of the all, and the greatest gift that we have been blessed with: The Sea of Cortez

Safe diving!
